Health classes explained

Four rate classes—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard—are how premiums differ and the factors that move you from one tier to another.

Carriers structure term pricing around health class. Company naming differs somewhat, but the hierarchy stays consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Super Preferred or Preferred Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, with additional table ratings for elevated-risk applicants. Tobacco consumers have a separate rate ladder at higher premiums.

What underwriters look at

Your frame (height relative to weight), pressure and cholesterol levels, inherited heart or cancer occurrences before age 60, your driving history, medications you take, your line of work and hobbies, and any tobacco or nicotine products. Getting the top tier requires excellent results across virtually every category; Preferred allows some variation; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate controlled ailments such as regulated high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

You'll rate yourself honestly on health: Excellent corresponds with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus and Average with Standard. Your quotes match this class; underwriting will confirm or adjust the final class. Estimate two classes if you're uncertain and compare results; let the underwriting process make the final determination. Selecting an inflated health rating won't lower your actual rate; it just makes estimates less useful.

Susman Insurance Agency has expertise in comparing carriers to locate those with more favorable rules for your specific condition—often more meaningful than comparing headline rates.
