Historic downtown

Founded in 1848, Napa's downtown is home to the 1879 Napa Valley Opera House and the Goodman Library, the oldest library building in California still in use as a library.

Nathan Coombs founded Napa in 1848 as a river trading post. The city grew through the late 1800s with the arrival of the railroad and the building boom that followed. Downtown landmarks from that era include the Napa Valley Opera House and County Courthouse, both completed in 1879, and the Historic Napa Mill, a riverfront complex built in 1884 that processed local grain. Each building was built to serve the community for generations.

Napa's downtown is more than Victorian architecture. Loudspeaker technology was invented in Napa in 1915 by Peter Jensen and Edwin Pridham in their workshop; they later founded Magnavox. The city was home to neighborhoods of Italian immigrants, Chinese laborers and tannery workers, whose stories are preserved in the historic districts like Spain Town and the riverside warehouses that once shipped goods up and down the Napa River. The Goodman Library, built in 1901, has operated continuously for more than a century.

These are places where Napa families mark their lives: a concert at the Opera House, a child's first library visit, a walk through neighborhoods where their grandparents lived. Planning for those family traditions means planning for the years when income protects them. A term policy sized to a mortgage, children at home or a business loan covers the years that matter most and ends when that need has passed.
